When: May 1st, 2010

Where: Doheny State Beach, Dana Point, California

What: 6-mile Elite Race, 2-mile Fun Paddle

Who: Paddleboard and SUP

Why: Raise $100,000 in support of SurfAid International

Help us reach our goal of $100,000 in support of SurfAid International <www.surfaidinternational.org>. All proceeds from event sponsorship, raffle and contestant entry fees will be donated directly to SurfAid International. The Paddle for Humanity is an official SurfAid event and is backed by the full support of SurfAid International (Non-profit ID# 141850033). All contributions are tax deductible.

Statement of purpose:

The goal of the Paddle for Humanity is to raise money and awareness of SurfAid International’s effort to improve the health, well being and self-reliance of people living in isolated regions connected to us through surfing. Due to recent global humanitarian catastrophes the importance of this message has never been clearer. It is our intention that this event encourages both individuals and community businesses to support SurfAid International’s cause.

Please support our sponsors…

Olukai, Surfline.com, Future Fins, Sambazon, Hobie Surfboards, Infinity surfboards, Rogue SUP, Quickblade Paddles, Mix1, Boardworks Surf, Johnson Big Sticks,World Safaris, Surfshot.com and Primo Island Lager.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE:

Pre-registration: on-line @ http://www.kintera.org/faf/home/default.asp?ievent=330395

You will be redirected to the Event Home Page. Simply click the “Register Now” button and you are on your way. After reading and agreeing to the Waiver/Agreement you will be asked to start a team, join a team, or join as an individual. This is where the fun begins.

Starting a team: If you didn’t see a team you wanted to join on the event home page and you want to get some friends involved then starting a team is a great way to spread the love, have fun, and raise money at the same time. Whether your team is serious or goofy by nature the most important attribute is that you have fun working together. Raising money as a group can be a great team building experience for work or community organizations and if you plan on kicking butt and taking names don’t worry; any money you raise as a member of a team counts towards your individual total as well so you are still eligible for the grand prize for the top individual fundraiser!

Join a team: Joining an existing team is easy, pick the team you want to join from the list provided, fill out your on-line registration form and start working towards the communal goal ASAP.

Join as an Individual: Are you the kind of person who works better alone? Are you more comfortable taking things into your own hands? Well then you are an individual. You don’t need a team to accomplish your goals. Sign up solo, fill out your info and show the rest how it is done.

Here are some tips to Better Fundraising for the Watermans: Applied Science Paddle for Humanity…

First, make sure to start NOW. Reach out to friends, people at work with similar interests, family, and others in the community who might be interested in supporting SurfAid’s efforts.
Consider talking to people you meet at community events – you’ll have access to a larger audience and get to more people more quickly, face to face.
If you volunteer at other organizations, consider discussing the Paddle for Humanity with other volunteers at group events.
Practice a one-sentence goal for fundraising; in this case, it could be
“I’m raising money for SurfAid International, a nonprofit that benefits medical programs in surfing destinations.”
If you have a blog or personal website, or plan to use email to ask for support, send a link to the Sponsor Participant page: http://www.kintera.org/faf/search/searchParticipants.asp?ievent=330395&lis=1&kntae330395=EEC8D69E9C024B1EAF9B345CD7E510CBI. From there, just search by name.
Be friendly; not everyone can donate. If someone can’t commit to supporting your fundraising this year, ask if you can contact them in future years to ask for support, or if s/he has ideas for other contacts they can help you make to ask for support. As a rule of thumb, 20% of your sponsors will make up 80% of the dollars raised, so a “no, sorry” isn’t a big deal.
Say thank you! Say it over and over again – you can never say it too often. The Paddle for Humanity website will help you send written thank-you notes to every supporter who signs up online.
